Flexible DC Cable Technology Breakthrough Supports Far-Reaching Offshore Wind Power Development

In November 2025, Shanghai Electrical Cable Research Institute Co., Ltd. announced a major technological breakthrough in ±800kV flexible DC cables. The independently developed insulation material has a dielectric strength of 50kV/mm, 25% higher than that of international similar products, and the cost is reduced by 18%. Adopting an integrated extrusion process of "insulation-shield-sheath", the cable has a bending radius of only 15 times the cable diameter, adapting to the dynamic installation needs of offshore wind power platforms in far-reaching seas. Currently, the product has passed the type test of China Electric Power Research Institute and will be applied to the Fujian Pingtan Far-Reaching Sea Wind Power Project. With a planned installed capacity of 1,200MW and supporting cables of 360 kilometers in length, the project is expected to be connected to the grid for power generation in 2026, with an annual power generation capacity meeting the electricity demand of 4 million households.
