On October 24, 2025, Liberty Networks announced the launch of the Caribbean submarine cable upgrade plan, replacing the 25-year-old MAYA-1 old cable with the MAYA-1.2 system. The new system has a total length of 2,386 kilometers and is expected to be officially put into operation in the first half of 2026. Through route optimization and technological restructuring, this upgrade will increase the one-way transmission capacity to 4 Tbps, doubling that of the original system, and reduce the transmission latency from Florida to the Cayman Islands from 21.4 milliseconds to 19 milliseconds. Adopting a ring design, MAYA-1.2 directly connects Florida (USA) and Honduras, and accesses the Cayman Islands through branch links, using existing landing stations to reduce construction costs. Technically, it introduces next-generation submarine line terminal equipment (SLTE) supporting 100G/400G high-speed interfaces, replacing the original system's 10G/40G interfaces to meet the low-latency business needs such as regional cloud computing and telemedicine. As a supporting measure, the southern section of the original MAYA-1 cable will be demolished and recycled to make way for the MANTA pan-regional submarine cable to be put into operation in 2027. At that time, the two cables will form a dual backbone communication network in the Caribbean, supporting the explosive growth of the regional digital economy.
