In November 2025, the Pan-African Electricity Union (PAEWA) announced the launch of the West African Cross-Border Power Grid Interconnection Project. A consortium composed of China Energy Engineering Corporation and South Africa's Cable Company won the core bid section with a contract value of 4.6 billion US dollars. The project will construct a 2,000-kilometer 220kV cross-border cable line connecting the power grids of Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana. Adopting energy-saving aluminum core cross-linked cables, the transmission loss is 22% lower than that of traditional products, and it has a special sheath design to prevent termite and rodent damage. The project is constructed in three phases. After full completion in 2027, it will realize the complementarity of power resources in the West African region, reduce fossil energy consumption by over 3 million tons annually, and benefit about 120 million people.
