Recycling Revolution: Germany Develops Novel Enzymatic Process for 100% PVC-Sheathed Cable Recycling
2026-03-21 09:10:36

Germany's Fraunhofer Institute has successfully developed a novel enzymatic catalytic depolymerization technology that can completely separate copper conductors from plastic sheaths in PVC-sheathed cables at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The recycled PVC achieves a purity of 99.7% and can be reused in cable manufacturing. The technology, certified by TÜV, costs only one-third of traditional pyrolysis methods. The European Cable Recycling Alliance plans to build the first demonstration production line within 2026, with an annual processing capacity of 50,000 tons of waste cable.
